After Dinner Mint

BOTH A DESERT MINT & A SAVOURY MINT
This member of the mint has a fantastic scent reminiscent of the after dinner mint chocolates. Highly recommended. Makes a good tea, but can be used on ice cream and fruit salad and other deserts that need a touch of mint. Goes well in punch! Grows in a similar fashion to the other mints so would be good to keep it in a pot where it cannot spread too far. Goes into a smaller growth habit for winter, but will surge away in spring. Basil Mint

USE AS MINT IN WINTER AND BASIL IN SUMMER. SUPERB FOR SALADS
One of my favorites! Delightful Basil flavored and scented mint. I use this all summer in salads but also in new potatoes and with any recipe that calls for mint. When cooking with it, it permeates the whole kitchen with the delightful smell of a temptation. This mint is excellent for making pesto because of the two distinct flavours. It spreads less than some of the other mints, but still is best planted in a pot. It will benefit from a trim when it gets a bit straggly. Growth tends to go more underground during winter. Perennial. 40cm.

Mint with a hint of chocolate flavours. When the leaves of this popular mint are rubbed there is a distinct chocolate scent. One customer tells me it is a good addition when she makes chocolate, or uses chocolate to cover strawberries, It is best grown in a pot as it has a tendency to spread. Perennial. 40cm.

Spearmint - Mentha sylvestris

Undoubtedly, this is one of the softest flavored mints. Very "fresh brushed teeth" taste and flavours. Grows like the others, with wild abandon in late summer and autumn, sending runners out in all directions. A sharp knife and gardening gloves do the trick, cutting the runners off and scooping out the ones just underground. In the second year, when you cut the runners, leave some in a new place and pull out the original plant. This will give your mint a renewed lease on life and it will produce fresh tastier leaves for you.

Wild mint is the one a lot of people have in their garden that they just call "Mint". This is an old variety sometimes known as horse mint as it used to grow profusely in the horse manure in the paddocks. An excellent mint for using as tea, with a smooth peppermint flavor. Soothing on the stomach after a big meal. It is easy to grow although like many mints it is best in a pot to prevent it taking over your garden.
