Use for Gotu Kola
Gotu Kola is very well known as a medicinal herb, supporting memory, concentration, and boosts your energy. It is used by herbalists to ease the pain of arthritis. Also used for skin conditions, but it is best used under the guidance of a registered herbalist as it can be dangerous to take too much. Growing in Sri Lanka and India, this plant grows along the sides of the rice paddies, and is commonly picked and used as a vegetable.
How to use and warnings
The usual rule of thumb is to start with 2 small leaves per day and build up to no more than 5. If the leaves are large, such as those in the photograph, two a day is sufficient. It is quite tasty so can easily be added to your salad. I simply pick a couple of leaves off and eat it fresh.
Grow Gotu Kola
Gotu kola is a creeping, ground covering herb. It prefers to be in a warm, shady, damp place where it has room to spread. Keeping it in a big pot is the best option, and have it sitting in about 3 cm of water all the time. It's natural habitat is to grow along the rice paddies in India, so it really likes being quite damp.
It has small pink flowers that hide under the leaves, and in good conditions, warm and damp, it will self seed freely. The winters in Hamilton will see the plant all but disappear and for the first year I thought I had lost the plants, but they re-appeared again in early summer when the heat was adequate.
