Background for Chocolate Mint

Chocolate mint is a recognised hybrid of the mint family Mentha x piperita ‘Chocolate’

Uses for Chocolate Mint

Mint with a hint of chocolate flavours. This mint although it has a distinctive scent and flavour it is not strong like some of the mints. When the leaves of this popular mint are rubbed there is a distinct chocolate scent. Adds a subtle flavour when chopped and sprinkled over fruit salads or deserts.

A tea made from Chocolate mint is delicious on a hot day. Make a brew, cool and put in the fridge to serve when chilled.

Can also be used to line the tin for chocolate cakes. One customer tells me it is a good addition when she makes chocolate, or uses chocolate to cover strawberries. Very popular with children and a good plant to start for the budding gardener.

Growing tips for Chocolate Mint

Although like most mints it is best grown in a pot to contain the shoots in spring and autumn, if it is in the garden, cutting the runners off in autumn will contain some of the spread. I usually run a knife around the plant in about March to cut the runners and every third year I leave some of the runners to create a new plant and remove the main section of the old plant. This seems to regenerate the plant. I have not found a good way to prevent rust, so I just live with it. It appears on the older leaves in summer but the new growth seems to be free. Using the plant and not leaving it to "overgrow" in summer seems to minimise the rust.
